Active layer thaw depth measurements should be made in accordance with the established CALM protocol. The data should then be formatted and sent to the CALM www site for archiving. Below is an example showing a portion of the 1998 record from Barrow. The grid nodes are numbered 1-121, beginning in the northwest corner and reading left to right down the rows (as you would read you read text). Thus, grid node 121 is in the southeast corner. I have also included the UTM Northing, Easting and Elevation on the 1000-m Barrow grid since that information is available. Snow cover and volumetric soil moisture content is also reported. Two thaw depth measurements were made on 21 August. These are reported, as is the average of the two readings. In most cases, four measurements are made. We use the letters "w" to indicate "deep water", "g" to indicate "gravel", and "b" to indicate "bedrock". The letter "m" is used to indicate missing data. Once the data is formatted, you can send it as an ASCII comma-limited text file or as an Excel file. We will archive the data for that site when we receive it. Send the files to CALM@uc.edu
