As part of a cooperative effort with the United States Department of Agriculture, CALM investigators have been collecting time series of soil moisture at several sites in Alaska.  Vitel soil moisture probes are connected to a Campbell data loggers and readings in the active layer and upper permafrost and made hourly.  The raw measurements are converted to soil temperature, volumetric soil moisture content, soil water salinity and electrolytic conductivity.  For further details on the probe, contact Vitel, Inc. (Information under Equipment Vendors).  The installation and processing is done by Ron Paetzold at the USDA-NRCS-NSSC.

This yields very large data sets which are currently being archived on the USDA-NRCS- NSSC computers.   Data sets are currently available for Barrow and Atqasuk in northern Alaska.   To access this data, using FTP, select Enter.  Be sure to download the readme.txt files as well.
