This three-course sequence focuses on the interactions between humans and the environment; students do not have to take the course sequentially.  Ecosystems, human population, and resource issues are studied as part of the environmental system and from a distinctly geographical perspective.  Alternative approaches to the study of the environment enable the student to understand the challenges to the development of a sustainable society.

261:  Ecosystems and Population Fall term and Summer I.  This course deals with the fundamentals of ecosystem structure, function, and process. World population dynamics and human adaptation to the environment are also covered.

262:  Food and Water Resources,  Winter term and Summer II.  This course focuses on the development, current practices, and sustainability of agriculture, fisheries, and water resource management. The impact of population growth, land use, and technological change on food and water resources are also evaluated.

263:  Energy and Mineral Resources,  Spring term and Summer III.  Part three examines energy's role in human history and reviews the contemporary societal problems of using non-renewable energy. The potential of renewable energy sources and conservation are evaluated, as are the consequences of non-renewable energy use, such as pollution and climate change.
